Big Rock Racing takes 2nd place at Monza
Round 3 brings more Porsche love with a high-speed blast at sunny Monza in the legendary Porsche 962C Group C race car. I love a one-make race so when the details of this event were revealed I was excited! The setup couldn’t be simpler— 16 identical cars, 12 laps, no stops for tires or fuel, no chicane, and no rain. THANK YOU! This one would emphasize outright pace and race craft.
I managed to qualify in pole position with a time of 1:26.909 but the competition was fierce! The 2nd place qualifier was a mere 0.011 seconds behind with another 10 drivers less than a second off my pace. I would fall back to 2nd by the end of the first lap but I stayed patient and worked with the faster drivers to pull us both away from the pack.
Only lap 3 I blew my braking mark going into the chicane at Seconda Variante. I rejoined in 5th, nose-to-tail with the new leaders. By lap six I was on the gearbox of the leader from Canada, HailstormB. We would swap places several times as the laps ticked down. On lap 11 the Canadian would serve a 0.5 second penalty before Parabolica, allowing me to regain the lead as the final lap began. I needed to hold him off for a lap, but he had the tow. I defended the middle going into Parabolica, forcing HailstormB to the outside. It was a drag race to the checkered flag. As we crossed the stripe the gap was 0.061 seconds. Separated by a car length and, unfortunately for me, the Canadian driver was ahead. Congratulations to HailstormB for the victory and a well fought race!
While it’s not the win I was hoping for, I’m delighted to take the podium two races in a row!
This is what a 0.061 second gap looks like
